Inclusion Health and Inequality Groups

Health inequalities are unfair and avoidable differences in health across the population and between different groups within society. This section provides a detailed look at groups who are identified with greater risk.

Homelessness

Homelessness is associated with severe poverty and is a social determinant of health.

Vulnerable Migrants

Certain groups of migrants are particularly vulnerable to potential health needs because of their experiences either before, during or after migration.

Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities

Members of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities expect to live between 10 and 25 years shorter than the wider population and to spend less years of their lives in good health.

Sex Workers

Sex workers face disproportionate health inequalities with the possibility of severe complex social needs underlying these health issues.

People in Contact with the Justice System

People in contact with the criminal justice system face significant health inequalities that differ to the rest of the population.

Victims of Modern Slavery

Modern slavery is a transnational organized crime that violates human rights with severe and diverse consequences for the physical and mental health of victims and survivors, and so has public health implications.

Learning Disability

A learning disability is a significantly reduced ability to understand new or complex information, to learn new skills, with a reduced ability to cope independently, which started before adulthood.

Carers

A carer is anyone, including children and adults who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction and cannot cope without their support. The care they give is unpaid.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilites (SEND)

A child or young person has special educational needs and disabilities if they have a learning difficulty and/or a disability that means they need special health and education support, we shorten this to SEND.
